All of us have had the opportunity to be associated with individuals from Greenbelt who have distinguished themselves for their outstanding volunteer service to our community. Rarely do these people receive the recognition they deserve.
All Greenbelters are asked to help identify this year’s Outstanding Citizen. Some outstanding citizens are easily spotted because of their leadership and high visibility within organizations. Some have a strong sense of compassion and touch others in a quiet way. Some have lived in Greenbelt for years; others, like 2013’s Outstanding Citizen Eric Zhang, are relative newcomers. Age is not a criterion; we encourage nominations of young adults who have made significant contributions to the Greenbelt community.
To nominate someone for the honor of being this year’s Outstanding Citizen, please complete the nomination form. Describe, in your own words, your nominee’s contributions or acts of kindness. Nominations are due by July 31, 2017. This year’s honoree will be the 45th since the award began in 1973.
The person chosen by Greenbelt’s Outstanding Citizen Selection Committee will be named at the Opening Ceremonies of Greenbelt’s annual Labor Day Festival. We strive to make this a memorable event for the honoree. State and local officials personally bestow congratulatory citations and proclamations. In addition to receiving special gifts, the honoree’s name is added to a permanent plaque located in the Community Center, and the honoree serves as the Grand Marshal for the Labor Day Parade.
